A La Carte vs. Prix Fixe

We were wondering when the term “a la carte”
became synonymous with “expensive”?

Well, it’s not at the Greenville Inn!

We view “a la carte” as meaning: “Dining Your Way”!

When we go on vacation ourselves, we steer away from  “prix fixe” menus because we rarely get what we want (usually a very limited menu) and not very generous portions.  Some people feel like they are getting a “bargain” when they get a predetermined number of courses…but is it a bargain if you aren’t getting full portions or food you want?

When we offer packages that include a predetermined number of courses, (“Stay & Dine” or  “Shop, Stay & Dine”) you can be guaranteed you can choose from our FULL  (a la carte) menu and the portions are not just a “sampling”.

So, next time you are deciding on any restaurant…don’t let the “Prix Fixe Bargain Factor” dictate your decision…choose a restaurant whose menu has many choices with full portions…life is short…why not have it “your way?”

We are working on our Summer 2010 menu with a chef that some of you might already know…

Check back to see the new menu and who the chef is!

More Snow Photos

I ventured out today, eventhough it was still snowing.  Snow is getting pretty high!  Some of the stores downtown will need to be dug out.

We have some drifting in the back so the snow is several feet deep…haven’t made it out there yet!

Katahdin in Snowstorm Jan. 2, 2010

The first snowstorm of 2010…and I’m sure it won’t be the last!

I just took these pictures of the inn and the steamboat The Katahdin.  You can see the snow falling in some of them.  It is snowing so hard that you can’t see the lake or the mountain views.

When this storm is finished tomorrow, I’ll be able to take some great photos of the mountains & lake.

Finally…Sunny and Warm!!

We ended up having a perfect 4th of July and our guests truly had fabulous views of the fireworks.  Greenville put on a wonderful display this year.  It was  fun listening to all the “oohs and aahs”…the horns honking and the cheers from the crowds below us showing their appreciation after the finale.  Fireworks on the 4th always choke me up…I guess because I have realized over the years how important it is to celebrate our amazing country and all that it stands for.   It was a pleasure filling up the restaurant and then enjoying such an awesome display of patriotism with everyone.  Thanks, Greenville!

Today’s weather was simply gorgeous and the forecast for this weekend is for more of the same…well, it is about time!

Jeff planted 6 new apple trees in the lower field and we are planning to put in even more…our own orchard! We have Macinotsh and Cortlands…not only will they look lovely…we will get some great apples in a few years.  The mature trees that we already have are producing alot of fruit that we will use this fall.

Jeff is also starting seven grape vines in the lower field.  A vineyard…all kinds of possibilities spring to mind!!  At the very least, we will make some jam and preserves when they start bearing fruit.  Pretty cool looking too!  We toured many of the vineyards at Napa in 2007 which sparked the idea of utilizing our lower field.   As soon as he has everything planted, I’ll post a photo.   Let us know if you have any hints or suggestions.

Jeff’s vegetable garden is doing very well…he has informed the chef that he will have squash in a week!  Tomato plants are doing great in spite of all the rain.   A few days like today will really make everything explode!

20 Moose!

Okay…new record last night…guests saw 20 moose on their moose safari!  No one has gone home”mooseless in Maine”.  Maine guides really know how to find the moose.

Going on a guided tour really does make finding the local wildlife easy.   These guides are extremely knowledgeable about the  entire area.  When we went on our guided tour, we saw “swimming” moose (yes, they are very good swimmers), river otters, loons, a bald eagle and numerous foxes.  Amazing…we highly recommend it!

Today, is June 7th…and we still have daffodils and tulips blooming!  Cherry trees just finished blooming and our apple trees are full of blossoms.  We have a true Spring season in northern Maine.  Actually, that is true of all the seasons here…I guess that’s why we love it so much!

Jeff has finished refurbishing Cottage 1- We added a new picture window, air conditioning and new siding.  He has done the same on Cottage 2…almost finished with the siding.

We’ve added fireplaces to Cottages 5 & 6…cozy fireplaces, towel warmers, pillow-topped beds, air conditioning, great views, roomy and private…what more could you want?!   I will be adding new photos to the website shortly.

We still have daffodils and blooming lilacs!

We still have daffodils and blooming lilacs surround the cottages

Our new chef arrived today…he is anxious to start cooking…and we are looking forward to it!  Join us starting June 22nd.  www.greenvilleinn.com
