Skiers at Big Squaw Mountain

It is good to see Big Squaw Mountain open and people skiing!

I was able to get some shots of the course set up for the team.  The course looked fast with packed snow…

hope they had some “good times“!

Big Squaw Mtn. Race Course

Big Squaw Mountain Ski Area

The views from the slopes of the mountain (which is also referred to as Big Moose Mountain) are of Moosehead Lake and surrounding mountain ranges.   They are spectacular!   Skiing on weekends is just one of the many activities that

Moosehead Lake and Greenville have to offer.

Snowmobiling is the #1 past time up here…if you don’t have a snowmobile we have businesses that specialize in renting you everything you will need…plus a guide if you want one.

A vacation in New England would not be complete without trying your hand at Ice Fishing…how many people do you know that have actually tried it?!  We have guides that will take care of all the details…even pick you up at our doorstep.

Dog-sledding is another one of those experiences that you can only do in a northern climate…it is one of the most relaxing ways to go sightseeing!

Some of our guests have gone snow-shoeing and have had a moose sighting…moose safaris are the #1 requested excursion in the spring, summer & fall.

Let us plan a Winter Wonderland for you!

Flying Moose

Had my camera in hand, battery charged, looking for moose to photograph…but alas…we saw many moose tracks…but no moose!

We did see some deer…but no moose today…you know they just knew I had my camera ready…set on “sports action”  and telephoto lens…they just knew…

So…the other day I had taken some pictures of the Moosehead Lake area’s

Flying Moose…you’ve heard of “when pigs fly”…well, from what I understand, it is a similar story but with a moose context.

So, at the very least, we have a moose photo for today!

The Flying Moose

In the winter, the moose will come out from the woods and eat the snow on the side of the road because it has salt from the roads being salted.  In the other seasons, they lick the salt right off the road.  We’ve been on the road and have had a moose kneeling down who refused to move.

In Greenville, Maine and the surrounding areas, moose outnumber humans 3 to 1!

We can hook you up with a guide or direct you to the best spots to find a moose.

Moose Mountain Range

Moose Mountain Range

Come see our “point of view”

This is really our view of the Little and Big Moose Mountains (previously named Big & Little Squaw Mountains).

Moosehead Lake is surrounded by some magnificent mountains:

  • Big Moose Mountain-(previously known as Big Squaw Mountain) At 3,196 feet, Big Moose Mountain dominates the view to the west from the Moosehead Lake area. The view from the top of the mountain is famous for viewing the Moosehead region and its many lakes and mountains.  This mountain was home to the first fire tower in the United States, built by M.G. Show in 1905.
  • Little Moose Mountain-The Little Moose Mountain Trail provides 9 miles of hiking along the ridgeline from one scenic overlook to the next. Hikers then descend into a forested bowl containing the Moose Ponds, an area that feels truly remote, but only 3 miles from town.

  • Elephant Mountain- looks like the profile of an elephant-it really does!  On January 24th, 1963, a B-52 Stratofortress-C crashed with 2 of its  9 crew surviving the -14 degree temperature.  Every year there is a Memorial Snowmobile Ride  to the wreckage on Elephant Mountain in honor of the brave men who served during the “Cold War”.
  • Little Spencer Mountain-Little Spencer Mountain climbs to 2,992 feet (911.96 meters) above sea level. Little Spencer Mountain is located at latitude – longitude coordinates (also called lat – long coordinates or GPS coordinates) of N 45.759208 and W -69.528389.
  • Big Spencer Mountain-(also called Number Four Mountain)this mountain has a 2,890 foot summit and has a fire tower, the fourth ever erected in Maine, which was active for nearly eighty-five years from 1906 until 1991.
  • Mount Kineo-this has  700-foot (210 m) cliffs rising straight up from the water, is a dramatic setting that has attracted visitors for centuries.

Finally…Sunny and Warm!!

We ended up having a perfect 4th of July and our guests truly had fabulous views of the fireworks.  Greenville put on a wonderful display this year.  It was  fun listening to all the “oohs and aahs”…the horns honking and the cheers from the crowds below us showing their appreciation after the finale.  Fireworks on the 4th always choke me up…I guess because I have realized over the years how important it is to celebrate our amazing country and all that it stands for.   It was a pleasure filling up the restaurant and then enjoying such an awesome display of patriotism with everyone.  Thanks, Greenville!

Today’s weather was simply gorgeous and the forecast for this weekend is for more of the same…well, it is about time!

Jeff planted 6 new apple trees in the lower field and we are planning to put in even more…our own orchard! We have Macinotsh and Cortlands…not only will they look lovely…we will get some great apples in a few years.  The mature trees that we already have are producing alot of fruit that we will use this fall.

Jeff is also starting seven grape vines in the lower field.  A vineyard…all kinds of possibilities spring to mind!!  At the very least, we will make some jam and preserves when they start bearing fruit.  Pretty cool looking too!  We toured many of the vineyards at Napa in 2007 which sparked the idea of utilizing our lower field.   As soon as he has everything planted, I’ll post a photo.   Let us know if you have any hints or suggestions.

Jeff’s vegetable garden is doing very well…he has informed the chef that he will have squash in a week!  Tomato plants are doing great in spite of all the rain.   A few days like today will really make everything explode!
